Amenorrhea and Natural Conception: Possible?

Monthly periods, though slightly painful for most women, are indicative of proper functioning of woman’s body and reproductive system. Nevertheless, there are many women who face inexplicable interruptions in their monthly periods. According to the best IVF doctors in India, these unexplainable interruptions in one’s menstrual cycles can be a sign of an underlying disorder of the menstrual cycle called Amenorrhea.

What is Amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea is the clinical term for absence of monthly menstrual periods in women. Missing menstrual cycles during one’s reproductive age is a cause of concern, as it could hint towards an underlying health problem, unless a woman is pregnant or has reached menopause. As the menstrual cycle is caused by various hormones in a woman’s body, it is normal for her to lose her periods during pregnancy or on reaching menopause. However, losing periods earlier can be a cause of concern, and indicate that the woman is most likely suffering from Amenorrhea.

Types of Amenorrhea:

Amenorrhea is generally of two types: Primary Amenorrhea and Secondary Amenorrhea.

Primary Amenorrhea:

When a female has not had her first period or menarche by the age of 16, she is referred to be suffering from primary amenorrhea. While most girls would have undergone puberty by this age, with their hormones triggering the monthly periods, the ones suffering from primary amenorrhea lack enough hormones to set off their menstruation. This kind of amenorrhea is quite common amongst girls who lack body fat to set going estrogen and other sex hormones.

Secondary Amenorrhea:

The absence of menstrual periods for three to six months in a woman who has previously had a normal menstrual cycle is often referred to as Secondary Amenorrhea. It occurs due to a decrease in the hormone levels or because of other underlying reproductive problems.

What causes Amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea is usually a result of certain factors causing imbalance in one’s hormone levels. The sex hormones play a vital role in triggering menstruation. Thus, a hormonal imbalance, owing to extremely high or low levels of estrogen and progesterone often restricts the ovulations, thus resulting in missed periods. Several factors contribute to these hormonal imbalances including but not limited to poor nutrition, stress, disorders of the pituitary gland, hypothalamus and ovaries, excessive usage of birth control pills and excessive weight gain or weight loss.

Is natural conception possible for women with Amenorrhea?

For a woman to conceive naturally, she has to ovulate. However, absence of periods for more than three months suggests that there is a probability of her suffering from amenorrhea, resulting in no ovulation, and requires medical assistance to restore her fertility. Nevertheless, the treatment of amenorrhea induced fertility problem depends majorly on the underlying cause, may it be exercise related issues or hormonal imbalance.

Generally, exercise related fertility issues and pill-induced amenorrhea do not require medication. However, there are several treatments, depending on the underlying cause of amenorrhea, like hormone therapy for amenorrhea caused due to hormonal imbalance.

Once diagnosed of amenorrhea induced fertility, your doctor would, at the first instance, try his best to restore your natural menstrual cycle. Despite what most doctors have to say about amenorrhea leading to infertility, there are several instances of women suffering from amenorrhea, who conceive naturally. Following a proper fertility diet, consulting the best IVF clinic in India  and taking supplements advised by your doctor helps you ovulate and have a normal menstrual cycle, which in turn helps in conceiving naturally.
