Shoulder resurfacing surgery gaining popularity

Shoulder resurfacing is gaining in popularity. Many middle aged patients with shoulder arthritis are preferring a shoulder resurfacing rather than a shoulder replacement. Recently a South African lady and an Indian doctor underwent this procedure in Chennai.

In shoulder arthritis, unlike in a fracture of the upper humerus, only the top hemispherical surface of the arm bone is worn out. Only this need to be replaced says Dr.A.K.Venkatachalam. It is minimally invasive as it takes away only a millimeter of bone from the surface. A metal cap is then impacted to give a new smooth lining to the shoulder joint.

There is hardly any pain and the patient can go home in just one day. The patient can regain full range of movements within three months.

While Indian medicine is definately coming of age, healthcare is not available to all. We need to do something about this too and use technology to reach out to more people.
